How to share a birthday wishlist and collect cash gifts without it feeling awkward
The short answer
Make a birthday page on Spray that opens on your wishlist, add a few things you'd love, and keep cash gifts folded away for guests who want them. Friends can chip in any amount or cover what's left on an item, and you can hide prices and progress if you'd rather not show what things cost or what's been raised.
- Lead with the wishlist; fold the other sections away.
- Guests chip in any amount, or cover the rest of an item.
- Hide prices, progress and names if you prefer.
- Reminders let guests pay after payday instead of saying no.
Make it feel like a celebration, not a fundraiser
Being specific helps. In US research, givers responded better to a specific suggestion than to a long list, and people appreciated what they had asked for more than surprises.1
Small amounts count too. Givers tend to think a pricier gift will be appreciated more; recipients in the same studies didn't feel that way.2
People want to give on your birthday; the awkward part is asking. A good page answers the question everyone has (what would you like?) and leaves the rest for guests to find.
- Choose Wishlist as where guests land. Birthday pages do this by default.
- Keep Fold the other sections on, so cash gifts show as one line guests can open.
- Write a warm welcome message. It's the first thing people read.
Set up your birthday wishlist
Choose Birthday
Start a page and pick Birthday. Add your name, the date and your link.
Add three to six items
A few clear wishes work better than a long list. Import them from an Amazon or Jumia screenshot, paste a product link, or type them in.
Decide what guests see
With Show progress on, guests see what's raised and can cover exactly what's left. Turn off Show prices and targets and guests just chip in, without seeing what things cost.
Set cash gift amounts
Add a few suggested amounts. Guests always see them smallest first, and can type any amount with a note.
Share it two weeks before
That gives people time to plan around payday.
How friends give
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Chip in | Any amount, with quick picks like ₦5,000 or ₦10,000 |
| Cover the rest | Pays exactly what's left, so the item is done |
| Gift it in full | Pays the whole item when nothing's been raised yet |
Turn on the currencies your friends abroad use, and they can pay by card in pounds, dollars, euros or Canadian dollars. Anyone not ready can tap Remind me and pick when.
Questions
- Can I hide how much I've raised?
- Yes. Turn off Show progress, for the whole page or one item, and guests see your wishlist without amounts raised.
- Do I have to buy the exact items?
- No. Each item is a fund paid to your bank account. You buy what you want, where you want.
- Can someone else make the page for my mum's 70th?
- Yes. Anyone can host; the money goes to the host's verified bank account.
