How to collect wedding gifts and Aso Ebi money in Nigeria: every option compared
The short answer
Nigerian couples collect wedding gifts and Aso Ebi money in a few ways: a personal account number on the invitation, cash, a spreadsheet, a Paystack or Flutterwave payment link, a registry like Iludio, an Aso Ebi service like Event Parcel, or an event page like Spray. They differ most on whether payments are matched to guests: a personal account number doesn't tell you who paid for what, while Spray matches each transfer to a guest and an item. Iludio is the better fit if you want physical gifts delivered, and Event Parcel if you want your fabric sourced and delivered for you.
- Spraying naira at a party is an offence under the CBN Act 2007, punishable by at least six months in prison or a ₦50,000 fine, or both.
- A personal account number is free, but nothing ties a transfer to a guest or an Aso Ebi order.
- Paystack's published local fee is 1.5% + ₦100, capped at ₦2,000; Flutterwave's is 2% plus 7.5% VAT.
- Iludio charges a 3.5% + ₦250 handling fee on cash funds, paid by guests, and suits couples who want physical gifts.
- In a US study, recipients appreciated gifts from their list more than surprises, and money most of all.

Your personal account number
It's the most common way, and it costs nothing. Vanguard reported in 2023 that invitations now carry 'cash only' requests, often with an account number. The problem shows up later: transfers arrive mixed in with your salary and bills, some with a sender name you don't recognise, none saying which Aso Ebi package they're for. Someone ends up matching screenshots to names in a notebook.6
It's still a fine choice for a small wedding where you know everyone, nobody is buying Aso Ebi through you, and you don't mind a few unnamed alerts.
Cash and spraying
₦50,000
The minimum fine for abusing the naira under section 21(1) of the CBN Act 2007, which covers spraying notes at social occasions. The alternative is at least six months in prison, or both.5
Courts have enforced it since 2024: Bobrisky was jailed for six months on 12 April 2024, and a Kano make-up artist got the same for spraying ₦100,000 at his own wedding. Cash handed over in envelopes avoids the dance floor, but it leaves no record unless someone writes it down.78
A Paystack or Flutterwave payment link
Payment links let guests pay by card or transfer, and the money settles to your bank. They're built for selling, not for events: there's no wishlist fund that fills up, no Aso Ebi stock or closing date, and nothing that matches a plain transfer to your own account back to a guest.
1.5% + ₦100
Paystack's published fee for local transactions, capped at ₦2,000, with the ₦100 waived under ₦2,500. International payments are 3.9% + ₦100.1
Flutterwave publishes 2% for local payments and 4.8% for international ones, plus 7.5% VAT. If you're selling one item, like a single Aso Ebi package, and you're comfortable setting up a link, either is a reasonable choice.2
Iludio
Iludio is a Nigerian wedding registry. Guests pick items from a catalogue or give to cash funds, and Iludio pays out in naira. If you want real presents bought and delivered, like a set of pots or a blender, it does that and Spray doesn't. Its published handling fee on cash funds is 3.5% + ₦250, paid by guests.3
It isn't built for Aso Ebi sales or for matching bank transfers to guests, so couples selling fabric usually run that somewhere else.
Event Parcel
Event Parcel handles Aso Ebi ordering, payment and delivery, including sourcing the fabric. If you don't want to buy bolts and hand them out yourself, it takes that job off you, which Spray doesn't. Its site mentions a small transaction fee but doesn't publish the number.4
Why a clear list, or cash, works
A US study by Francesca Gino and Francis Flynn ran five experiments, one with real wedding-registry gifts. Recipients appreciated gifts from their own list more than gifts the giver picked, even though givers expected the surprise to land better.9
The same research found recipients appreciated money more than any item they had asked for, while givers assumed money would be the least welcome. A short wishlist with cash gifts alongside gives guests both.9
Collect it all on Spray, step by step
Create a wedding page
Choose Wedding, add your names, the date and the venue, and pick your link. Setting up is free.
Add your Aso Ebi
The shop starts with Bride's side and Groom's side. Set prices, stock and a closing date, and choose pickup, delivery or both.
Add a wishlist and cash gifts
Add a few funds with plain names, like Honeymoon, and turn on cash gifts with suggested amounts.
Verify and turn on payments
Confirm who you are and add the bank account in your name. Your page gets its own account number.
Share one link
Post it in the family groups. Guests pay by transfer to the page's account number or by card, with no app to download.
Watch payments match
A transfer that equals a package price, or a whole multiple of it, is assigned automatically. One from a guest with an open order is attached to it. Anything else is marked Needs review with a suggestion, and you can split it across items.
Log what came in elsewhere
Cash in an envelope or a transfer to your personal account goes in with Log a payment, so stock, totals and your thank-you list stay complete.
Questions
- What's the best way to collect wedding gifts in Nigeria?
- It depends on what you're collecting. For physical gifts delivered, a registry like Iludio. For fabric sourced and delivered, Event Parcel. For Aso Ebi, a wishlist and cash gifts on one link with every payment matched to a guest, Spray.
- Should I put my account number on my wedding invitation?
- You can, and it's free, but nothing tells you who sent what or which Aso Ebi it was for. A page with its own account number matches transfers to guests for you.
- Is there a wedding registry in Nigeria?
- Yes. Iludio is a Nigerian registry for items and cash funds, with a published 3.5% + ₦250 handling fee on cash funds, paid by guests. Spray has wishlist funds alongside Aso Ebi and cash gifts.
- Can I use GoFundMe for a wedding in Nigeria?
- Not as an organiser based in Nigeria: GoFundMe doesn't support Nigerian organisers. Guests abroad can still pay by card on a Spray page.
- Is there an app for collecting Aso Ebi money?
- Several services handle it. Event Parcel sources and delivers fabric. Spray runs an Aso Ebi shop with stock and closing dates and matches each transfer to a guest. Guests pay on Spray from a web page, with no app to download.
